Grid-tied and hybrid solar systems are both grid-connected, which is why buyers confuse them. The difference is storage: a hybrid configuration carries a battery and can keep chosen loads running during an outage; a plain grid-tied configuration cannot. This page separates the two in planning terms.
Choose grid-tied when the grid is dependable and no load in the building is critical. Choose a hybrid-style configuration when the grid is present but untrustworthy — outages are frequent enough, or the loads sensitive enough, that a backup list deserves its own storage. The hybrid is not a better grid-tied system; it is a different answer to a different grid.
Because hybrid terminology varies between suppliers, do not order by label. Ask, in writing, what the quoted configuration does when the grid fails: which circuits stay live, supplied by which battery, for how long under the stated loads. A configuration that cannot answer that question in writing is a grid-tied system wearing a hybrid label.
| Question | Grid-tied | Hybrid |
|---|---|
| Grid connection | Yes | Yes |
| Battery storage | No | Yes, sized to a backup list |
| Outage behaviour | Stops | Carries listed loads |
| Confirm in writing | Grid connection terms | Outage behaviour, circuit by circuit |
Before ordering, confirm the minimum order quantity and lead time for your configuration, and ask which documents apply to the exact system you are quoted.
